Taliban Spokesperson Rejects Rumours of Differences Among Taliban Leaders

Feb 16, 2023, 12:26 GMT+0

Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesperson, rejected the claims that there were differences between the Taliban leaders. According to Mujahid, his comments about how to criticise the supreme leader of the group had been focused on the media.

The Taliban spokesperson said that foreign circles have misinterpreted his recent comments in which Mujahid said that the Taliban leader should not be openly criticised.

Mujahid added that his comments had not been aimed at a specific person, however, he spoke about the activities and criticism of the media regarding the Taliban leaders.

Meanwhile, Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Taliban's interior minister, had criticised the monopolisation of power by Taliban leaders in a gathering in Khost province on Saturday and said that the current situation is not acceptable.

Haqqani had said that the current situation will result into rifts between the people of Afghanistan and the Taliban.

A day after Haqqani's speech, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid had said at a gathering at Kabul University that criticism of the supreme leader should be conducted privately.

Several senior Taliban leaders said on Wednesday that the legitimate desires of the people must be answered for the survival of the Taliban regime.

Ali Salajegheh, Iranian vice-president and head of department of environment, announced that he will visit Afghanistan to pursue Tehran’s share of water from Helmand river. Salajegheh said that Taliban has not taken practical steps for the water rights of Iran from the river.

He had previously said that there is no government in Afghanistan to follow up on water rights issues of Iran from Helmand river.

According to Iranian media reports, Salajegheh stressed that discussions about the water rights of Iran has been underway through diplomatic channels. He added, "I want to go to Afghanistan myself."

The head of the environment department of Iran said that the Taliban’s arguments regarding the water rights issues are not real or based on scientific logic.

Salajegheh hoped that the talks on the water rights issue will finally come to a conclusion.

Border disputes and the water rights of Iran from Helmand river have been sources of conflict between Iran and Afghanistan.

The Taliban have repeatedly said that they accept the Helmand water rights treaty, but Iran has stressed that the group has not taken any practical steps on the issue.

Several Afghan refugees have held a protest in front of the United Nations office in Islamabad on Wednesday. The protesters said that they have fled Afghanistan due to security threats and have lived as immigrants for over a year.

Protesters on Wednesday asked the United Nations to review and address their asylum applications.

The Afghan protesters included journalists, civil activists and prosecutors in the former government of Afghanistan and have been waiting for their asylum request to be accepted by the United Nations for the past year.

NRF Stresses on Formation of Democratic, Moderate Islamic System in Afghanistan

Feb 15, 2023, 11:36 GMT+0

The National Resistance Front (NRF) announced that while Afghanistan commemorates the 34th anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet forces, the country is currently too under the reign of a terrorist group.

NRF emphasised on the formation of a democratic, moderate Islamic system in Afghanistan.

According to the NRF, such a system should be based on people’s vote, and must respect the freedom of people, especially women in Afghanistan.

Both the previous governments of Afghanistan and the Taliban honour this day, but Afghanistan is still mired in war and conflict.

The Taliban, which seized power for the second time on August 15, 2021, have imposed severe restrictions on social and political life of the people of Afghanistan and have limited their freedoms.

This group has excluded women from social life and have banned their right to education and work.

While these restrictions have been met with protests of women groups and international criticism, the Taliban have reacted with violent crackdown of these protests and have ignored these international demands.
