Gianni Tognioni, secretary of the People’s Tribunal said that the tribunal’s goal is to build a global consensus against the Taliban for depriving Afghan women and girls of their rights.
Tognioni told Afghanistan International that once sufficient evidence is presented before the tribunal, an international support network should be established to continuously monitor the condition of women in Afghanistan.
He explained that investigating the Taliban’s human rights violations against women and girls would help ensure the group’s accountability on the global stage and prevent it from acting with impunity.
According to Tognioni, ongoing monitoring and review by the tribunal aim to demonstrate that these acts constitute crimes against humanity and pose an unprecedented challenge to international law, one that must be formally criminalised.
He stressed that examining Afghanistan under Taliban control should not only expose the reality of gender apartheid but also lead to stronger international oversight mechanisms to address systematic violations of women’s rights.
Highlighting Afghanistan’s situation, he said, should mobilise global public support and pressure governments to recognise that the Taliban’s treatment of women is not merely a domestic issue, but a fundamental assault on international law.
Tognioni concluded by calling for unified global action saying that International public opinion must rally behind Afghan women and pressure governments to hold the Taliban accountable.
