Karzai Asks US Not To Spend Afghanistan’s Frozen Funds

Jun 30, 2022, 12:13 GMT+1

In a statement released on Thursday, former Afghan President Hamid Karzai asked the United States to protect the $7 billion worth of frozen assets of Afghanistan and not spend it “under any circumstances”.

Mr. Karzai’s call comes close on the heels of reports stating that the U.S. officials are reportedly working with the Taliban on mechanisms to allow the central bank of Afghanistan to use the frozen funds.

Mr. Karzai called on the United States to release the frozen funds and termed it “monetary support” for Afghanistan’s central bank and a national treasure of the people of Afghanistan.
