Semyon Grigoryev, Russia's ambassador to Tajikistan, said that NATO has left behind a country that has now become a base for international terrorist groups. Grigoryev added that terrorists have moved towards the border between Afghanistan and Tajikistan.
According to the Russian ambassador, terrorists threaten the security of Commonwealth countries and the members of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation.
According to a statement posted on the Facebook page of the Russian Embassy in Dushanbe, Grigoryev discussed Afghanistan on Wednesday, at a ceremony commemorating the anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan.
The Russian Embassy’s statement added, "The war in Afghanistan affected all the people of the Soviet Union. More than 15,000 Tajiks were called to perform their international duty in Afghanistan, and 366 of them died.”
Grigoryev added that the 201 Russian military base in Tajikistan is currently the guarantor of the security of not only Tajikistan, but all of Moscow’s allies.
The 201 military base is one of the largest military facilities of Moscow outside Russia. This base is located in Tajikistan near Afghanistan.
