Mullah Abdul Haq, the Taliban’s Deputy Minister of Counter Narcotics, said that at least 3.5 million people are addicted to drugs in Afghanistan. Abdul Haq also said that over the past one year, 75000 drug addicts have been treated in the country.
Meanwhile, Mullah Khairullah Khairkhwa, the Taliban’s minister of information and culture, said that everyone in Afghanistan has been affected by narcotics.
The two Taliban ministers discussed the state of drug addiction in Afghanistan at a gathering in Herat province.
Mawlana Islamjar, the Taliban’s governor in Herat, assured the Taliban officials that he will not to allow the cultivation of opium in the province.
The Taliban government has banned the cultivation, and trafficking of narcotics in Afghanistan. However, reports indicate that drug cultivation continues in some provinces across the country.
