The Taliban-controlled Central Bank of Afghanistan announced on Saturday that it is going to auction 17 million dollars on Sunday in order to devalue US dollars against Afghani. The Taliban has continuously auctioned millions of dollars in the local markets over the past year.
While the value of other regional currencies like Iranian rial and Pakistani rupee has been in constant decline, Afghani currency has been stable due to international humanitarian aid money.
Over the past few weeks, millions of dollars have reached Kabul and the Taliban have confirmed that they have received these packages as part of the international humanitarian aid.
However, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has repeatedly clarified that cash packages shipped to Afghanistan are deposited in UN accounts in private banks, and will be used by UN agencies solely for the purpose of humanitarian aid and other supportive programs. The money will not be handed over to the Taliban, the announcement had said.
There has been a disruption to international banking transfers and liquidity issues since August 2021.
