Iranian Sunni Preacher Urged Taliban To Resolve Water Rights Issue of Iran

Mar 10, 2023, 15:31 GMT+0

Mawlawi Abdul Hamid, an Iranian Sunni preacher, urged the Taliban to resolve the issue of Iran's water rights from the Helmand River. In his Friday prayer sermons, the Iranian cleric said that the water should be divided between Iran and Afghanistan.

Abdul Hamid stressed that the people of Sistan and Baluchistan have the right to draw water from the Helmand river.

Referring to the water issues in the Sistan and Baluchistan region of Iran, Mawlawi Abdul Hamid said that the region enjoys good quality of land, but is left without water and the people suffer due to it.

He said that the Sistan region experiences dust storms and there is no water for agriculture and normal life.

With the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, Iranian authorities have repeatedly demanded Iran's water rights from the Helmand River.

Shortly after taking control of Afghanistan, the Taliban announced that they had released water from the Kamal Khan dam and recognised Iran's right to draw water.

Recently, the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, said that the Taliban have promised to provide Iran with water rights from the Helmand River. Despite the release of water from the Kamal Khan dam by the Taliban, Iran's foreign minister said that the Islamic Republic is not satisfied with the Taliban.

Taliban Confirms Transfer of 181 Afghan Prisoners from Iran to Afghanistan

Mar 10, 2023, 13:25 GMT+0

Hafiz Zia, the deputy spokesperson of the Taliban’s Foreign Ministry, announced on Friday that Iran has handed over 181 Afghan prisoners to Afghanistan. Zia added that these Afghan prisoners were transferred to Afghanistan after negotiations with Tehran.

These prisoners entered Afghanistan via the Islam Qala border in Herat province.

The transfer of Afghan prisoners to the Taliban takes place at a time when according to the United Nations, Afghanistan’s judicial system has collapsed.

On the other hand, there is no oversight by human rights groups on the Taliban prisons, and numerous reports of death of people as a result of torture by the Taliban members have been published.

Over the past week, the Taliban also received 450 other Afghan prisoners from Iran.

Taliban Kills Men After Misunderstanding, Prevents Protest by Families in Mazar-e-Sharif

Mar 10, 2023, 11:56 GMT+0

The Taliban prevented protests organised by families of the men who were killed on Tuesday night in Mazar-e-Sharif city. According to the victims’ families, the Taliban officials told them on Friday that the men had been killed due to a misunderstanding.

The Taliban also prevented these families from filing a complaint with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan.

The Taliban killed the men and displayed their bodies to the public in Mazar-e-Sharif city on Wednesday. While on display, the Taliban published photos of the men holding weapons in their hands.

The group claimed that they killed the men due to their crimes of kidnapping and rebellion against the Taliban and said that they had been killed in a gunfight.

The families of the victims said that they seek justice, compensation, and restoration of their dignity and stressed that these men were unarmed.

The families of the victims added that the dead men were residents of poor areas of Kabul and had traveled to Mazar-e-Sharif to seek jobs.

The Taliban spokesperson has not reacted to these reports yet.

Over 500 Students Graduate From Taliban Jihadist Schools in 3 Provinces

Mar 10, 2023, 09:11 GMT+0

The Taliban announced that 500 students have graduated from the Jihadist schools in three Afghan provinces. The Taliban-controlled Bakhtar News Agency, on Friday, reported that there are 300 graduates from Helmand, 160 from Laghman, and 50 others from Sar-e-Pul province.

While the Afghan educational system has been on the verge of collapse and the Taliban have banned girls from secondary and high school, the group has continued to expand on establishing jihadist schools across the country.

The Taliban have announced that they will establish three to 10 jihadist schools in each district of Afghanistan.

These jihadist schools are religious seminaries that teach students Taliban’s version of religion and their teachings on jihad and other extremist religious issues.

Foreign Ministers of EU, US & Other Western Nations Urge Taliban To Reverse Decrees

Mar 9, 2023, 13:41 GMT+0

In a joint statement, foreign ministers of the US, EU, and other Western nations said that over the past year and a half, Afghanistan has seen one of the steepest declines globally in the respect for the human rights of women and girls.

It stated that if the Taliban’s policies are not reversed, the harmful effects of these reprehensible measures will be devastating and irreparable for Afghanistan’s economy and society.

The statement urged the Taliban to respect all people of Afghanistan, deliver on their commitments to the Afghan people and the international community, and reverse all decisions and practices restricting women’s and girls’ exercise of their human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Afghan women and girls have been denied access to secondary education, to higher education, to public and political spaces, and to employment opportunities.

While calling attention to the situation in that country, it added that services for supporting victims of gender-based violence have been largely dismantled.

It emphasised that the signatory countries support the calls by the people of Afghanistan for women and girls’ full access to quality education at schools and universities and women’s unrestricted ability to work in all sectors, including humanitarian assistance and basic services delivery, equitable and comprehensive delivery of which is impossible without full participation of women.

The joint statement on the occasion of International Women’s Day had been issued on behalf of the Foreign Ministers of Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Qatar, the Republic of Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States and the High Representative of the European Union.

The statement added that the world fears that the Taliban will implement further measures restricting women and girls’ exercise of civil, political, economic, cultural, and social rights, with a dire impact on the future of Afghanistan and its people.
