Mar 13, 2023, 17:47 GMT+0

The Taliban Ministry of Public Health announced that a four-day polio vaccine campaign has started in 31 provinces of Afghanistan. According to the Taliban ministry, more than 9.4 million children under the age of five will be vaccinated during this campaign.

The provinces of Bamiyan, Daikundi, and Ghor have not been included in the current vaccination round.

The Taliban did not say whether they will implement the vaccine programme for these areas after the winter season ends in Afghanistan.

Earlier in 2022, the Taliban’s Ministry of Public Health also conducted a four-day polio vaccination campaign in 16 provinces of Afghanistan.

According to the Taliban, Afghanistan has recorded two positive cases of polio in Kunar and Paktika provinces in 2022.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only countries that have not been able to eradicate polio so far.

Taliban’s Continued Restrictions Forces Women-Only Library in Kabul to Shut Shop

Mar 13, 2023, 12:37 GMT+0

Owners of Zan Library in district 3 of Kabul closed the library due to security threats and restrictions by the Taliban. In a statement, the owners said that the Taliban stormed the library and shut down its operations twice over the past six months.

The women-only library had been opened for visitors in August 2022 by several women activists in Kabul.

These activists stated that the purpose of establishing this women’s library was to provide an environment for women and girls to access books even during a time when the Taliban had banned girls’ education in Afghanistan.

"We emptied the shelves, locked the door [of the Zan library], and transferred the books home," the library's founders said in a statement released on Monday.

According to the owners of Zan library, in addition to the Taliban's restrictions on women's activities, economic pressures also made it difficult to operate the women’s library.

Over the past 18 months since taking power in Afghanistan, the Taliban have imposed extensive restrictions on the social life of Afghan women.

Currently, Afghan women and girls are prohibited from entering schools and universities across Afghanistan.

Assistance Reached 23 Million People in Afghanistan in 2022, Says WFP

Mar 13, 2023, 11:27 GMT+0

The World Food Programme (WFP) announced that in 2022, the organisation supported around 23 million people, including 12 million women and girls, in Afghanistan. According to WFP, these people were facing food insecurity across the country.

WFP stressed that the assistance was provided by the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Asian Development Bank.

This is while the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimated that the number of people in need of aid in Afghanistan to be around 25 million in 2022.

Meanwhile, OCHA in a report announced that a staggering 80 percent of households across Afghanistan have experienced income reduction.

OCHA’s assessment shows that the economy of Afghans has deteriorated since 2019.

According to the UN organisation, the deteriorating economy caused a sharp decline in income, rising debt, and high unemployment under the Taliban.

Afghans Spend Over 500 Million Dollars on Health Issues Outside of Afghanistan

Mar 13, 2023, 08:15 GMT+0

Qalandar Ebad, the Minister of Public Health of the Taliban, said that Afghans spend over 500 million dollars on health treatments outside Afghanistan. Ebad asked medical specialists who have fled Afghanistan to train medical staff inside Afghanistan.

According to Ebad, if the doctors receive professional training, Afghans will not spend their money on treatments abroad Afghanistan.

The Taliban’s minister of public health has discussed capacity building in the health sector in Afghanistan at a time when Doctors Without Borders have repeatedly warned about the collapse of the health system of Afghanistan.

In its latest report, this international organisation had stated that the inefficient system, widespread poverty, and increased restrictions against women have dominated the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.

Doctors Without Borders questioned the Taliban’s policies against women and said that without education, there can be no training or education for the next generation of health workers in Afghanistan.

Iranian Sunni Preacher Urged Taliban To Resolve Water Rights Issue of Iran

Mar 10, 2023, 15:31 GMT+0

Mawlawi Abdul Hamid, an Iranian Sunni preacher, urged the Taliban to resolve the issue of Iran's water rights from the Helmand River. In his Friday prayer sermons, the Iranian cleric said that the water should be divided between Iran and Afghanistan.

Abdul Hamid stressed that the people of Sistan and Baluchistan have the right to draw water from the Helmand river.

Referring to the water issues in the Sistan and Baluchistan region of Iran, Mawlawi Abdul Hamid said that the region enjoys good quality of land, but is left without water and the people suffer due to it.

He said that the Sistan region experiences dust storms and there is no water for agriculture and normal life.

With the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, Iranian authorities have repeatedly demanded Iran's water rights from the Helmand River.

Shortly after taking control of Afghanistan, the Taliban announced that they had released water from the Kamal Khan dam and recognised Iran's right to draw water.

Recently, the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, said that the Taliban have promised to provide Iran with water rights from the Helmand River. Despite the release of water from the Kamal Khan dam by the Taliban, Iran's foreign minister said that the Islamic Republic is not satisfied with the Taliban.

Taliban Confirms Transfer of 181 Afghan Prisoners from Iran to Afghanistan

Mar 10, 2023, 13:25 GMT+0

Hafiz Zia, the deputy spokesperson of the Taliban’s Foreign Ministry, announced on Friday that Iran has handed over 181 Afghan prisoners to Afghanistan. Zia added that these Afghan prisoners were transferred to Afghanistan after negotiations with Tehran.

These prisoners entered Afghanistan via the Islam Qala border in Herat province.

The transfer of Afghan prisoners to the Taliban takes place at a time when according to the United Nations, Afghanistan’s judicial system has collapsed.

On the other hand, there is no oversight by human rights groups on the Taliban prisons, and numerous reports of death of people as a result of torture by the Taliban members have been published.

Over the past week, the Taliban also received 450 other Afghan prisoners from Iran.
