Jamiat-e-Islami Party Says UNAMA Need to Maintain Neutrality & Not Hide Taliban’s Flaws

The Jamiat-e-Islami party called for a review of the performance of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

The party called UNAMA an organisation which covers up the flaws of the Taliban and stressed that the UN must restore its neutrality in Afghanistan.

In a statement on Monday, Jamiat-e-Islami too supported the demands of the Coalition of Women Protest Movements, which has asked for the closure of UNAMA offices in Afghanistan.

On Monday, the Coalition of Women Protest Movements in a statement called for the closure of UNAMA in Afghanistan. The coalition argued that UNAMA had failed even to defend the human rights of its own employees.

The Jamiat-e-Islami party called UNAMA "incompetent" and stressed that a "new practical approach" must replace the current operational mechanisms of the UN offices in Afghanistan.

After the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban, UNAMA’s mandate in Afghanistan has been extended so that the UN office should monitor human rights, support civil society organisations, and facilitate political dialogues.

Critics have said that UNAMA has not taken a bold stance to put pressure on the Taliban.
