Taliban Has Not Met Iran’s Expectations, Says Iranian FM

Sep 4, 2023, 09:48 GMT+1

Hossein Amir Abdollahian, Iran’s foreign minister, said that the Taliban has not met Tehran's expectations. According to Amir Abdollahian, Taliban’s behaviour is not in line with the interests of the two sides, and stressed that the two countries “face challenges”.

On Saturday, the Iranian foreign minister pointed to the border clashes between the Taliban and Iranian forces and said that such clashes have taken place several times in the past two years, but the Taliban blamed the clashes on people who act arbitrarily.

Amir Abdollahian said that although the Taliban has tried to manage and control the border skirmishes, still, there was a clash between Iranian forces and the Taliban fighters.

In an interview with Etilaat daily, the Iranian foreign minister once again emphasised on the formation of an inclusive government in Afghanistan and said that in such a government “we consider the Pashtun ethnic group and the Taliban to be one of the important realities of Afghanistan”.

Amir Abdollahian also said that issues which take place in Afghanistan have direct impacts on Iran.

He also emphasised that the Taliban must give the water rights of Iran from the Helmand River. However, he has stressed that compared to former president Ashraf Ghani's era, Iran is in a better position on the water rights issues.

The Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic said, "We will not forget what Ashraf Ghani said when he wanted to inaugurate the Kajaki Dam, but the Taliban has repeatedly stated clearly that it adheres to its water rights treaty."

In 2021, before the Taliban’s return to power, former Afghan president Ashraf Ghani had said “we are committed to water rights with Iran, but we will exchange water for oil”.

The Iranian foreign minister also emphasised that pursuing Iran’s water rights is an inherent duty of the ministry of foreign affairs of the country and “we will continue to follow up on the issue with all our might”.

NRF And AFF Target Taliban Outposts in Takhar, Parwan Provinces

Sep 2, 2023, 14:50 GMT+1

The National Resistance Front (NRF) said that the front has killed five Taliban members and wounded two others in an attack on a Taliban base in Baharak district of Takhar province.

Meanwhile, the Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF) also said that the front has killed two Taliban members and wounded three others in Bagram, Parwan province.

Independent sources have not yet confirmed the NRF and AFF attacks.

In a statement published on social media platform X, NRF added that the front’s forces were not harmed in the clashes with the Taliban.

The National Resistance Front and the Afghanistan Freedom Front are armed groups opposed to the Taliban, which initiated armed resistance against the Taliban when the group returned to power in August 2021.

The two resistance fronts have increased attacks on the Taliban in recent weeks. However, the Taliban has been silent and has not reacted to the attacks by the two fronts.

Afghan Women Rights Activist On Hunger Strike, Demands Recognition of Gender Apartheid

Sep 2, 2023, 13:19 GMT+1

Tamana Zaryab Paryani, an Afghan women's rights activist, has started a hunger strike in Germany to protest against the Taliban's policies towards Afghan women.

Paryani told Afghanistan International that women have been subjected to torture and violence over the last two years and have been deprived of human rights because of their gender.

She will be on a hunger strike for twelve days in Cologne, Germany, starting from September 1.

She said that there is "gender apartheid" ongoing in Afghanistan and the international community, especially Germany, should recognise this discrimination of the Taliban. Paryani also emphasised that the German government should ban any kind of engagement with the Taliban.

Preventing more financial support and blocking Taliban officials’ travels abroad Afghanistan are among other demands of Paryani.

The women's rights activist also demanded the release of political prisoners from the Taliban prisons.

Tamana Paryani is one of the Afghan women who, along with several other, took to the streets of Kabul during the first days of the Taliban's return to Afghanistan, demonstrating against the strict practices of the group.

Following these protests, the Taliban intelligence agency raided the house of Paryani in Kabul and arrested her and Paryani’s four sisters. They spent 26 days in the Taliban’s prison in Kabul.

A few months after being released from the custody of the Taliban, she, along with her sisters, fled Afghanistan and shifted to Germany.

In the last two years, the Taliban has deprived women of work and education and imposed strict policies against them. Despite widespread protests and international pressures, the Taliban has not retreated from its restrictive policies towards women.

OIC Delegation Meets Taliban Officials, Discusses Moderate Islam

Sep 2, 2023, 10:17 GMT+1

The Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) announced that a delegation of the organisation held talks with Taliban officials about tolerance, moderate Islam, girls' education, and women's work.

In a statement, however, the Taliban did not point out the discussion about women’s work and education during their meeting with the OIC delegation.

The OIC delegation arrived in Kabul early on Thursday, and over the last two days, met Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban's foreign minister, and Mawlawi Abdul Kabir, the group’s Deputy Prime Minister for Political Affairs.

On Friday, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation expressed hope that meetings with Taliban officials would continue to resolve issues of concern.

In a statement about the meeting with the OIC delegation, the Taliban said that Abdul Kabir spoke about the end of the war in Afghanistan and claimed that the group doesn’t allow linguistic, ethnic, and religious differences in Afghanistan.

Sep 2, 2023, 09:32 GMT+1

The Taliban’s Central Bank confirmed that Hedayatullah Badri, the governor of the bank, has been injured in a traffic incident.

Earlier, Afghanistan International, citing its sources, reported that Badri was injured in a traffic incident on the Herat-Kandahar highway.

In a statement on Friday night, the Central Bank of the Taliban, said that Badri’s health condition is stable.

The bank added that Badri "has been treated and will soon return to work in the central bank".

The Central Bank’s statement also confirmed that one person was killed in the accident.

Images that reached Afghanistan International show that after this incident, the Taliban transferred Badri to Kandahar by helicopter.

Hedayatullah Badri is one of the well-known commanders of the Taliban. He previously worked as the group’s finance minister.

UN Special Rapporteur Discusses Afghanistan’s Human Rights Situation In Turkiye

Sep 1, 2023, 15:29 GMT+1

Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Afghanistan, said that he spoke with various groups of Afghans, including women, about the human rights situation in Afghanistan during a four-day trip to Turkiye.

He said that there are serious concerns about the human rights situation in Afghanistan.

On Friday, Bennett wrote on social media platform X that he met Turkish government officials and UN entities during the visit.

Turkiye is one of the countries which has kept its embassy open in Kabul after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, and the country's ambassador often meets Taliban officials in Kabul. On the other hand, Turkiye has hosted Taliban delegations in Ankara on several occasions.

Despite the unofficial relations that Turkiye has with the Taliban, it hosts a large number of political leaders, parliamentarians and former government officials opposing the Taliban.
