Assisting Female-Headed Homes Becoming A Great Challenge in Afghanistan, Says UN

Feb 7, 2023, 11:37 GMT+0

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that assisting displaced and local female-headed households has become a great challenge in Afghanistan. UNHCR stressed that the problem persists and has recently helped 24,000 people in southern provinces.

The UN agency while admitting to challenges of assisting female-headed households said that it is mostly because of the latest Taliban ban on the work of Afghan women.

Recently, the Taliban has banned women from working with non-governmental organisations in Afghanistan.

Aid organisations have repeatedly stated that without female employees, they cannot help women and children in need in Afghanistan.

US Lawmakers Concerned About Verification of Taliban-Associated Accounts On Twitter

Feb 7, 2023, 09:27 GMT+0

A group of US Republican lawmakers have warned about the purchase of verification indicators (tick marks) by the Taliban on the microblogging site, Twitter

In a letter to Twitter Chief Executive Officer, Elon Musk, the lawmakers sought clarification regarding Twitter’s verification process and how it vets users’ identities.

According to the Washington Times, Pat Fallon, Keith Self, Ronny Jackson, and James Moylan, members of the US House of Representatives, warned Musk that terror groups may find loopholes to amplify their propaganda on Twitter.

The lawmakers have stressed in their letter that the United States doesn’t recognise the Taliban as a legitimate government in Afghanistan.

The representatives added, "We cannot allow these murderous groups to abuse American-based platforms to suppress women, religious freedom, democracy, and ethnic minorities."

After Twitter implemented a new subscription-based policy for buying verified blue ticks, several Taliban-associated accounts on Twitter have purchased blue ticks and share pro-Taliban content to thousands of followers on a daily basis.

USAID Asks Implementing Partners to Avoid Entering Into MoUs With Taliban, Says SIGAR

Feb 6, 2023, 15:54 GMT+0

Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) reported that United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has asked its implementing partners not to enter into MoUs with Taliban.

According to SIGAR, USAID may go through MoU approvals on a case-by-case basis.

SIGAR said that since the US government doesn’t recognise Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan, USAID officials wouldn’t be able to witness document signing as is required by the organisation’s grant agreements.

So far, no government in the world has recognised the Taliban in Afghanistan. However, Taliban has said that the group enjoys diplomatic relations with regional countries.

Taliban Arrests Afghan-French Journalist Mortaza Behboudi in Kabul

Feb 6, 2023, 13:00 GMT+0

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) announced on Monday that Morteza Behboudi, a French journalist from Afghanistan, was arrested by the Taliban in Kabul. RSF said that Behboudi had been detained by the Taliban on January 7, and imprisoned on the charge of "espionage".

RSF and 14 French media outlets, with whom Behboudi has worked, issued a statement asking for his immediate release.

In a joint statement issued by 16 French media organisations, it was stated that on 15 January, Behboudi’s mobile phone called the assistance unit at Reporters Without Borders (RSF), and no message was left. According to RSF, it is impossible to know whether it was Behboudi who called or whether one of his jailers used his phone.

According to the information obtained by Reporters Without Borders, Behboudi has been arrested by the Taliban after entering Afghanistan, when he was trying to obtain a media work permit.

After he spent 11 days in one of the Taliban prisons in Kabul, this group accused him of "spying" and transferred him to another prison.

Rights Group Urges UN To Ensure Safety & Calls for Release of Imprisoned Afghan Girl

Feb 6, 2023, 12:17 GMT+0

Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) has urged the United Nations to ensure the safety and called for the release of the Afghan girl Elaha Delawarzai. AIHRC described Taliban's behaviour towards Delawarzai as "inhumane".

AIHRC in a statement called on the European Union to engage with the Taliban and work towards the release of Delawarzai.

The commission also expressed concern about the safety of the family members of Delawarzai and demanded clear measures to provide them with life without fear.

Elaha Delawarzai, a student of Kabul Medical University, released a video clip on August 30, 2022, and alleged that Saeed Khosty, the former spokesperson of the Taliban's Ministry of Interior, "raped" and "forcibly" married her.

In the video, Delawarzai revealed how she had been tortured and her family being pressured by Taliban members.

Delawarzai’s family said that almost three months back, she managed to escape to Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, but soon had been kidnapped by the Haqqani network of the Taliban and is now in a Taliban prison in Kabul.

Peace & Stability in Afghanistan Interlinked With Political Consensus, Says Qatar Envoy

Feb 6, 2023, 10:51 GMT+0

Mutlaq bin Majed Al Qahtani, Qatar's special envoy for Afghanistan, said on Sunday that the Taliban cannot achieve peace and stability without a comprehensive political consensus. Qahtani discussed political inclusiveness with the Taliban foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi.

Along with the Taliban’s foreign minister, the Qatar special envoy met with the group’s Interior Minister and Director of the General Directorate of Intelligence in Kabul.

His visit to Kabul comes after the publication of an Italian TV’s report about Qatar's role in the fall of the previous government.

According to Qatar State News Agency, Qahtani emphasised on the right of women and girls to education and work and said that the people of Afghanistan should be granted access to all their rights.

Although the Taliban has said that the ban on women's education is temporary, representatives of foreign governments have continuously asked the group to reopen educational centers for girls and women.

The special representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar has said that Doha "continues its efforts to facilitate the conditions for reaching a comprehensive political consensus so that security and stability prevail in Afghanistan”.

A statement from the Taliban’s foreign ministry has not given further details about the Taliban’s viewpoints during the meetings with the Qatari envoy.

Abdul Qahar Balkhi, the spokesperson of the Taliban’s foreign ministry, said on Twitter that political cooperation, improvement of relations, and humanitarian aid had been discussed during the meeting.

Taliban officials have repeatedly said that they have formed an inclusive government with representation from various provinces of Afghanistan.

After taking power in Afghanistan in late 2021, the Taliban has appointed commanders and mullahs associated with the group in senior government positions. The group has not yet invited any political party or figures from other Afghan sides to include in their government in Afghanistan.
