Airstrikes Were Self-Defence Against Terrorists, Says Pakistan

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said its recent airstrikes in eastern Afghanistan were carried out under its right of self-defence against what it called the heinous actions of terrorists.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said its recent airstrikes in eastern Afghanistan were carried out under its right of self-defence against what it called the heinous actions of terrorists.
It warned it would act again if attacks on Pakistan continued.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi told a press briefing in Islamabad on Thursday that Pakistan’s security forces had intensified Operation Ghazab-Lil-Haq against militants following the recent attack in Karachi.
He said Islamabad remained committed to eliminating terrorism while safeguarding national security, adding that protecting the lives and safety of Pakistani citizens remained the country’s highest priority.
Andrabi said security forces had recently killed at least four terrorists, including a commander of Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, in Bajaur. He described the group as an Indian proxy and said Pakistan had summoned a Taliban diplomat and issued a strongly worded protest after the Karachi attack.
Pakistan carried out airstrikes in the Afghan provinces of Paktia, Paktika and Kunar on June 29. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said at least 36 civilians were killed and 163 others wounded in the strikes, which he said were carried out by Pakistani fighter jets.
The Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesperson again claimed that Afghan nationals were involved in the Karachi attack and said one Afghan suspect had been arrested. He argued that the incident demonstrated that Afghan territory and Afghan nationals continued to be used to organise terrorist attacks inside Pakistan.
In the recent assault on a military facility in Karachi, three Pakistani security personnel were killed and four others wounded. Pakistan’s military said three attackers were also killed and that a fourth suspect, identified as an Afghan national, had been captured after being injured.
The Taliban’s Defence Ministry responded by claiming it had carried out airstrikes on Tuesday evening against targets in Saranan, in Pishin district of Pakistan’s Balochistan province. The ministry said the strikes targeted Islamic State positions and anti-Taliban groups.
Andrabi also confirmed that Pakistan’s Interior Ministry had issued a directive ordering the immediate detention and deportation of undocumented Afghan migrants.
Earlier, Pakistan’s Interior Ministry announced that, from July 10, security forces would immediately detain Afghan nationals without valid visas.
